Static and Dynamic Technologies

https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0Bw6PSvr5BsgQZTk4NWU5NWItOTdjMi00Yjk2LWIzZTYtMmFiMzI4MTY1ZWU2&hl=en

As an online student I feel that I am more on the dynamic side of the continuum. Through both of my courses this quarter I feel very confident in the amount of collaboration and communication I have done with my fellow students through either a wiki, blog, and discussion boards. In both of my courses I have been given a topic to work on from the instructor, but the content that I have to provide comes from my own knowledge and research. In the area of content I am actually quite surprised with what I have learned in the area of creating projects to provide and learn new information. The multimedia project that is due shortly has been quite a challenge in many ways, but I am learning new ways to present information. Along the way I have gathered information for my topic of mobile learning.
Where I feel that I am more on the dynamic side as a learner I don't feel as an educator I'm there for the way I am presenting information to my students. Some of the areas such as communication and collaboration are still restricted by my school district in how we use technology, but I need to work more on having them create more content so that they can learn more about the objectives that I am presenting to them.

In creating the graphic organizer of the 3 C areas I thought of my classroom, students learning, and my teaching instruction. I tried to envision what areas I would like to use various technology with my students, how I could use it, or what I am currently using. Right now I feel that I’m in a technology rich district, but we are forbidden to use many tools to engage students.
While looking at the technology tools I found that many overlapped in other areas. Currently in my district we are using Skype to talk to other building so that we can professionally plan and collaborate together, but we are not allowed to use it with students. I think that would be a wonderful technology to have two classrooms full of students share science experiments, writing, or complete a reader’s theater project from . The same idea came to mind for blogs and wikis. I have several students who are very shy and reserved when it comes to speaking out in class and sharing their thoughts, but when they put pen to paper the ideas flow like a waterfall. If they were allowed to keep a student blog or start a group wiki I cannot imagine the knowledge they would be able to share with classmates or another age similar classroom. Wiki and blogs in my mind fit in all 3 C areas.
Content can be delivered by the educator, the students can collaborate together, and continued communication can come from the educator and the students combined. The educator posts questions so that all of the groups of students will respond (Durrington, Berryhill, & Swafford, 2006, p. 191).

Storyboard attempt again....

http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0Bw6PSvr5BsgQZmQxZjhlZWItMzJjOC00ZWU5LTgzMTMtYWM5NjkxZWVmMWU4&hl=en

After reading a few other storyboards I saw Stephen Raymond's storyboard was done in Google Docs. Going to attempt this and hope for the best!!!

I do like the fact with this project I'm learning new ways at doing presentations. A bit of a challenge, but I'm learning!

Mod 3 - Assessing Collaborative Efforts

Palloff and Pratt in the book Building Online Learning Communities, discuss the roles and participation for the the facilitator and students in an online learning community. The thought is that there is always the "cheerleader" of the group who tries to continue a discuss and keep things moving. This helps those who are are not used to working in a community build that sense of belonging and wanting to learn too. Palloff and Pratt in Collaborting Online, also discuss that students should have a reflective component to their online work. Another aspect is having a group project that also has an individual component to it. Students can then show off their individual work while still collaborating with a group.
If students do not want to work on a collaborative project then I feel the group should try every effort to include him or her, but if that fails let the instructor know. The group should not be assessed on this person's lack of effort. If the attempts were made then the group would carry on minus that member. At this point it would then be up to the instructor on what type of grade or assignment that person is given.

Storyboard

I have fought and fought with this assignment. First, I couldn't get any free storyboard software to work. I have never used storyboard before, so I'm sure I was doing something not quite right. After completing the outline I cannot get it to post here. I'm going to write the basic layout that I plan, but wish I could get it to go! If anyone wants to leave a comment explaining how I can add attachments please feel free!!!!

Outline
1. Speaker will explain and present the need for mobile devices in the classroom.
2. Examples (still shots) of studnets using mobile devices in the classroom.
3. Describe various schools that are currently piloting the program. Explain the success they are seeing.
4. Short video from k-nect describing the benefits of mobile devices.
5. Short video for Goknow.com describign the benefits of mobile devices in schools.
6. End with speaker discussing the need to bring classrooms to the 21st Century of learning.

Collaboration

Collaboration in D.E. has transformed the way that people are able to communicate in D.E. today. Tools like wiki and blogging allow students in D.E. to share work, ideas, and insight with one another. Thinking back to face to face classes there was a great deal of lecture from the instructor and then students were mostly on their own to figure out assignments and complete projects. The collaboration that is involved in D.E. allows people who are in the same or similar fields to share ideas that not too many years ago you could only share with people that worked directly with you. Not only through D.E. am I sharing ideas for my courses, but I am also learning new ideas and technologies from people all around the world.

Module 1 - Distance Education

It seems that all of the authors, Huett, Moller, Foshay, Coleman, and Simonson agree that evolving distance education and creating an equivalency between face-to-face courses and distance education courses. Simonson (2000) states “equivalency is achieved through a variety of learning experiences that are tailored to the environment and situation in which students find themselves”.
Distance education faculties spend as much time if not more preparing for courses. Having faculty understand that the online instructors are worthy of their professional services as much as the onsite instructors is one area that will still need to grow. The faculty of distance education needs to take time now to express the needs of having online courses that meet standards and accreditation in the higher eructation field the same as the face-to-face model of higher education (Moller, Foshay, & Huett, 2008).
Not having experiences personally with the K-12 model of distance education I am quite interested. This could become a very beneficial model for many families in situations where attending a regular public school is not possible. At the time of the publication from Huett, Moller, Foshay, and Coleman (2008) there was little research pertaining to K-12 schools and online learning. There is concern that younger students do not have the capability to learn as a young adult could in the avenue of online learning. Not having learned the communication skills to be able learn in that avenue could be the biggest problem. Another concern is that the educators are not properly trained in this area to teach online.
Distance Education has made many gains in the last few years. It is becoming greatly accepted by people to obtain their educational degrees or further their studies. In the next decade I feel that we will continue to see growth in this avenue.

New to Blogging

I'm new to the world of blogging. I will get my post on here for this week tonight. I think I actually have figured out what I'm doing now! Sorry to anyone who has me listed as a follower twice. Somehow I have my school e-mail as one follower and my ymail as another. Couldn't see the posts from the school one.
